History of Theraputic Massage

The word massage derives from the Arabic word 'mass', meaning 'to press softly' and is one of the most ancient and universal of the healing arts.

For as long as people can remember, laying on of hands and massage have been used to relieve pain and heal the body.

Used widely in Greek, Egyptian, Indian and Chinese cultures massage has been used as a form of relaxation as well as a beauty treatment.  The practice mostly disappeared in the West after the fall of the Roman Empire, although massage was later re-introduced through the efforts of Per Henrick Ling in 18th Century Sweden.

Benefits

Massage as a holistic therapy works on both mind and body.  The main psychological effects are to aid relaxation and ease stress.

Physical benefits include improving the circulation of blood and lymph, alleviating muscular pain, assisting with the removal of toxins from the cells of the body.

Treatment

The therapist will conduct a consultation to assist in producing a personal treatment plan and to ascertain any medical conditions which may have a bearing on the type of treatment which can be offered.

Aromatherapy oils are often used and work directly on the skin.  For this reason, clients would normally undress for the treatment, although it is fine to retain undergarments or to be covered  with a towel if you prefer.  It is best to discuss this with the therapist prior to the treatment commencing, they will be happy to administer treatments in a way which does not make the client feel awkward or self-conscious.

It is advisable to take time to relax for a short time after any treatment, avoid any strenuous activity or alcohol for a few hours following a massage.
